Artist meets Archive

In 2006 she was awarded with the ‚Prix HSBC pour la Photographie.’ She lives and works in Paris. The work title, ›Playground Disorder‹, suggests a playful handling of places and describes an order, which, whatever order it may have been, is brought into disarray. And indeed the two work groups, ›The house tha… more

The Berlin-based artist Stefan Heyne (born in 1965) works in a constant exploration of the boundaries between painting and photography. His photographs are never descriptive and don't seek to depict visible reality. Instead, his motives attain autonomy by renouncing the notion of reproduction – a quality long considered to be central to the medium.
Heyne's works are characterised by a vigilant manipulation of the obscured detailing of the objects and spaces shown. The allure of his prints lie… more
Nathan Baker: Seminal
SCULPTURE / PHOTOGRAPHY / VIDEO
Seminal critically examines the dynamic between mass media production and pop culture internalization. The work operates under the assumption that through its dependance on mass media, the contemporary ideal of pop culture has abandoned content through its emphasis on production and marketing process. Here, both static and moving images, as well as sculptural objects aim to construct a modular monument to the material byproducts intrinsic to … more
Jason Lazarus: "Self-Portrait as an Artist" und "Wright Commission"
The 'Self-portrait as an artist series' utilizes the conceptual self-portrait as a mode of personal and cultural investigation. Featuring documentary images, performative image-documents, and constructed imagery, the series conflates multiple modes of photographic practice in order to create an expanding photographic epic. By combining an almost diaristic photographic practice with a photographic engagement with broader contem… more
Sound Affects is a collection of color photographs that explore Memphis, Tennessee as a visual and musical place. It captures musical locations, music's presence and influence, and the musicality of everyday life.
Memphis has a rich musical history and colorful visual character. It is the 'Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll' and the 'Home of the Blues'. It is a place where legend, myth and memory evoke a faded past.
It is an old jukebox, glowing in the corner of a dark bar, playing a scratched record … more
Photography / VIDEO
Armed with a medium format camera and a long cable-release, photographer Greg Stimac releases the shutter as his subjects open fire. The pictures in his series ›Recoil‹ sometimes catch the blur of bullets leaving the barrel or a momentary burst of light and smoke, but they are more remarkable for the relationships suggested between the people in the frame. The shooters range from intent to casual, their companions demonstrating anything from total absorption to mild curiosity to an indiffere… more
Marina Gadonneix's work belongs, as she said, to the realm of "observation of the everyday world in its construction and layout, making the familiar world in which we live a place of artifice with its dimension of anxiety, strangeness and melancholy." One of the qualities of her work, apart from its plastic excellence, is indeed the degree of explanation and interpretation that it contains. Marina Gadonneix is interested in the media world in a biased way, photographing empty television studios,… more
Texas is the nearest thing to Heaven there is.
Paul Bogada, former advisor to Bill Clinton
There can be no doubt who it is that is not wanted here. NEVER HILLARY is the inescapable message proclaimed by a large billboard located aside a country road somewhere in the fields of Texas. Nine car tires have been arranged on the inhospitable ground in a semi-circle around the wooden framework to prevent potential collisions. Peter Granser came upon the telling motif during his territorial exploration… more
The arrow provides orientation, unmistakably pointing toward the right: it is displayed on a billboard in the midst of steppe-like scenery, with large lettering announcing 'Signs.' This is a picture within a picture, rife with symbolic content, for Peter Granser has chosen to give this title to his latest series of photographs, taken in 2006/07 in Texas. In the course of an extended photographic tour of the US state, Granser attempted to find reference values that could be captured in images cap… more
