Festival: – 10 Nov 2005

The third International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Tirana, building on the success of the previous editions, will open again on September 2005 in Tirana, Albania, a city in a continuous change. Tirana Biennale3, will take place in five different moments/openings, covering the time span of 60 days, following one another, completing the whole project on the 28th of October with a finissage. Tirana Biennale 3 is curated by Zdenka Badonvinac (Slovenia), Roberto Pinto (Italy), Joa Ljungberg (Sweden), Hou Hanru (China/France), Edi Muka and Gezim Qendro (Albania), who are in charge of the single episodes that make up the event. 'Sweet Taboos' is the title of this third edition that, through artists' works will explore the taboos of our contemporary society, while reflecting upon the meaning and nature of taboos and upon how they can relate and artistically interact within the social and political Albanian context. The Biennial will be structured as an art-site, focusing more on the process of making the event, to improve the dialogue between artists, visitors and their surroundings. The result will be a place where art is not simply shown, but produced, where the artists are invited to work on their projects during the whole time span of the Biennial in places that represent historic as well as contemporary connotations of the iconography of the city that hosts the event, becoming part of its context and complexities making possible that many works consist of research and interventions on places and their respective mythologies. The multifaceted structure of the event is born out of the necessity to create a lively mechanism through approaching artists curious and willing to contribute to the cultural enrichment of a reality while experiencing the peculiarities of the city that created it. The artistic and political attention is thus drawn on an incredible potential of people and situations with the intention of raising a needed discussion on the many taboos that condition our lives.
